Tame U.S. inflation seen keeping Fed on the sidelines

WASHINGTON ( ) – U.S. consumer prices rose moderately in April and underlying inflation remained muted, supporting the Federal Reserve’s projection of no further interest rates increases this year.

The persistently benign inflation reported by the Labor Department on Friday could, however, ratchet up White House pressure on the U.S. central bank to cut rates. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the Fed for tightening monetary policy, arguing that inflation was low.

Trump has claimed the economy could go “up like a rocket if we did some lowering of rates, like one point.” On Friday, Trump tweeted, “Great Consumer Price Index just out. Really good, very low inflation! We have a great chance to ‘really rock!’ Good numbers all around.”

The Fed last week kept interest rates unchanged and signaled little desire to adjust monetary policy anytime soon. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said he believed the weak inflation readings “may wind up being transient.”

With rents and healthcare costs increasing solidly in April, economists agreed temporary factors were restraining inflation and expected a pickup, especially after the Trump administration on Friday raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25% from 10%.

“If one were worried … then help may be on the way, in the form of higher tariffs being passed through to a store near you,” said Michael Feroli, an economist at J上海夜生活网PMorgan in New York. “In sum we believe the Fed will remain comfortable with their ‘on hold’ posture for the foreseeable future.”

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.3% last month, lifted by rising gasoline, rents and healthcare costs. The CPI gained 0.4% in March. It rose 2.0% in the 12 months through April after advancing 1.9% in March. Economists had forecast the CPI increasing 0.4% in April and rising 2.1% year-on-year.

Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the CPI edged up 0.1% as apparel prices dropped for a second straight month and the cost of used motor vehicles and trucks declined further. The so-called core CPI has now increased by the same margin for three straight months. In the 12 months through April, the core CPI increased 2.1% after gaining 2.0% in March.

The Fed, which has a 2% inflation target, tracks a different measure, the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, for monetary policy. The core PCE price index increased 1.6% on a year-on-year basis in March, the smallest rise in 14 months, after advancing 1.7% in February. The April PCE price index data will be published later this month.

Economists said rising healthcare costs, which were also evident in April’s producer price report that was published on Thursday, suggested the core PCE price index probably increased 1.7% year-on-year in April. They saw little chance of the Fed cutting interest rates this year.

NO “INSURANCE CUTS”

“We would fade any inference that the Fed may be nudged toward ‘insurance cuts’ due to weak inflation,” said Michael Hanson, head of global macro strategy at TD Securities in New York. “Rather, we would need to see a run of multiple months with core PCE inflation around 1.5% in order for the Fed to start that conversation.”

Inflation remains tame as increased worker productivity keeps labor costs contained, despite a tightening job market.

Gasoline prices rose 5.7% in April, accounting for more than two-thirds of the increase in the CPI last month, after surging 6.5% in March. Food prices fell for the first time in nearly two years, with food consumed at home dropping by the most since March 2016.

But consumers paid more for rent and healthcare. Owners’ equivalent rent of primary residence, which is what a homeowner would pay to rent or receive from renting a home, increased 0.3% last month after rising by the same margin in March.

Healthcare costs increased 0.3%, matching March’s gain. There were increases in the cost of prescription medication and doctor visits. But the cost of hospital services fell 0.5%.

Apparel prices declined 0.8% last month. They plunged 1.9% in March, which was the biggest drop since January 1949, after the government introduced a new method and data to calculate apparel prices.

Prices for used motor vehicles and trucks fell 1.3%, decreasing for a third straight month. The cost of new vehicles rose marginally. There were also declines in the cost of airline fares, alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

Prices for household furnishings fell for the first time in 10 months. The cost of these goods had been boosted by tariffs.

Economists said the latest round of duties on Chinese imports put an upward risk on inflation.

“The extent to which that will feed into consumer inflation will depend in part on how long the tariffs are in place,” said Sarah House, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sterling stalls ahead of vote to delay Brexit; dollar ticks up

NEW YORK ( ) – The U.S. dollar gained on Thursday for the first time in a week, albeit modestly, as the pound stalled at lower levels ahead of a vote to extend Britain’s March 29 deadline for exiting the European Union.

The pound was down 0.54 percent at $1.3266 in afternoon American trade as Prime Minister Theresa May piled pressure on rebel lawmakers on Thursday to back her battered European Union divorce deal as parliament prepared to vote on seeking a delay to Britain’s departure that could ultimately derail the process.

A day earlier, the British currency soared nearly 2 percent and reached nine-month highs after lawmakers voted against a potentially 上海夜生活论坛disorderly “no-deal” departure from the EU.

Analysts cautioned against putting large positions on sterling due to lingering uncertainty about Brexit.

“With the uncertainty around (Brexit), it’s not a time … to take sizeable positions. The risk/reward still favors waiting for some clarity,” said Charles Tomes, senior investment analyst at Manulife Asset Management.

The dollar index, a gauge of its strength against six other major currencies, was up 0.22 percent at 96.757. It had fallen overnight, at one point brushing a nine-day trough of 96.385.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased more than expected last week, suggesting the labor market was slowing, but probably not to the extent implied by a near-stall in job growth in February.

Other U.S. data showed import prices in February rose by the most in nine months. Still, the inflation trend remained weak as import prices dropped on a year-on-year basis for a third straight month. The data remained supportive of the Federal Reserve’s pledge to be “patient” before raising interest rates.

“In the foreign exchange market overall there’s not a lot of conviction” at the moment, said Tomes. “Volatility is low and people don’t want to put on sizeable positions either way.”

The Australian dollar AUD= fell to its lowest in three days after reports that China and the United States had delayed a meeting to end their trade war. The meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping will not occur this month and is more likely to happen in April at the earliest, Bloomberg reported. It was last at $0.7061, down 0.54 percent on the day.

Investors are worried that any escalation in the trade conflict will pummel export-oriented economies like Australia, whose biggest trading partner is China. The yuan was relatively stable in the offshore market, down 0.31 percent at 6.7230.

Goldman Sachs sets targets for Hispanic and black entry-level hires

( ) – Goldman Sachs Group Inc is setting targets for hiring minority groups for the first time as it ramps up efforts to diversify its workforce, according to a memo sent by top executives to employees on Monday.

The Wall Street bank, which last year said it wanted women to make up half of its entry-level workforce, now is aiming to ensure that 14 percent of new analysts and associates in the Americas are Hispanic or Latino and 11 percent of them black, according to the memo, which was seen by .

In Britain,上海夜生活 Goldman Sachs wants 9 percent of its entry-level workforce to be black.

The bank, whose senior executives are primarily white and male, did not set targets for more experienced employees, but is now requiring businesses to interview at least two qualified diverse candidates for each open position.

Goldman Sachs said in the memo it is “nearly there” with the targets it announced last year for campus hiring, and is exploring ways to increase the portion of staff who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, disabled or veterans.

David Solomon, who took over as chief executive of the bank in October, has been vocal about increasing diversity. He and two deputies sent the staff-wide memo ahead of disclosures on its gender pay gap that are required in Britain.

Last year, Goldman Sachs reported a mean gender pay gap in Britain for its international business of 55.5 percent and a mean bonus gap for the unit of 72.2 percent. Other companies, including HSBC Plc, fared worse.

Goldman Sachs is not alone on Wall Street in its diversity and gender equality campaign. Citigroup Inc has also set goals to have half its global staff to be women, and 30 percent of its staff to be black and Hispanic or Latino in the United States.

Preview: Juventus – Genoa

Juventus could be judging their return to form perfectly and will continue their pursuit of Serie A leaders Napoli when they host a Genoa side.

Flashscore presents the key facts before the match:

After an indifferent start, Juventus have stormed back into contention and are in a direct fight with Napoli, who are one point ahead. The depth in their squad should help the Champions stave off the injury crisis that currently engulfs them.

Genoa sit just six points above the bottom three, but have found their rhythm in recent matches. The visitors have lost just once in their last eight SA games (W4, D3, L1) and even started the new year with a 1-0 win over Sassuolo.

The hosts have been immaculate at both ends of the pitch (49 goals scored, 15 conceded) this campaign. They have kept 11 clean sheets in SA – more than any other side – and have conceded only one goal in their last 11 games in all competitions.

Their visitors have scored only 16 goals so far – the second-fewest – while drawing blanks in seven of their ten trips in SA. However, they have conceded more than one goal only once in these games (10%).

Genoa haven’t conceded in four SA games on the trot. Another clean sheet will make it the first time they have done so since 1964!Top 5 matches to watch during October’s first weekend Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – With a new weekend in European football about to begin, we dive into the Top 5 matches to watch across all the major leagues. After…

Key battles: In the absence of Paulo Dybala, Douglas Costa remains the top bet for Juventus. Can he fill the void?

His task will be tough against Genoa’s rock Ervin Zukanovic, who has made the most interceptions and clearances for them so far.

Stat attack: The last time Genoa won at Juventus in SA was way back in 1991, a run of 14 games without victory (L11, D3).

Missing players

Pardew had only words of praise for Rondon

Alan Pardew, the West Bromwich Albion head coach, insisted that he admires Salomon Rondon for his determination to finish the match despite being involved in James McCarthy’s horrific injury.

The Venezuela international had a collision with the home side midfielder in the second-half of this fixture and it caused a horrible double leg fracture for James McCarthy – Rondon fell in tears after that but he managed to finish the match somehow and in the end, he was really close to scoring the winning goal as he hit the crossbar.

The West Brom manager spoke about this incident and Rondon’s effort as he said, according to Sky Sports: “Salomon was traumatised because he probably heard a break or something, a noise that would have affected him, he’s that kind of person.  I wasn’t sure if he was going to carry on but he got himself together after being affected and, fair play to him, he was the best player on the pitch today. He was awesome for us and it was such a shame he hit the bar at the end.”Top 5 Real Madrid players who are succeeding on a loan Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – We need to talk about the Top 5 Real Madrid players who are currently succeeding away from the club and are currently on a…

He also added that they could have won this game at the end of the day: “It’s not often you come to Goodison Park and feel slightly disappointed. We felt we could have won that game. We played well at times, took the lead, frustrated Everton and had them where we wanted them.”

In the end, Alan Pardew claimed that he is also disappointed by McCarthy’s injury: “They only had about two or three chances in the gam上海夜生活e and they scored from one and that got them back in the game. The unsavoury incident in the game, which led to James McCarthy getting a bad injury affected everybody a little bit. I’m disappointed for the lad whose been injured but we’re also disappointed we didn’t get a result.”

Moyes admitted that West Ham made terrible mistakes

David Moyes, the West Ham United manager, was left disappointed after his side were beaten 3-2 at home by Newcastle United despite having a lot of chances to win the match – and the manager blamed his players for making very silly mistakes.

West Ham had managed to take the lead thanks to Marko Arnautovic but the guests managed to come from behind as Henri Saivet and Mo Diame scored – the hosts had a great chance to equalize the match but Andre Ayew’s penalty was saved and Christian Atsu doubled the lead on the other side. The Hammers managed to score a late goal thanks to Ayew but it just wasn’t enough for making a comeback.

The Scot spoke about the match and said that his side should have won, according to Sky Sports: “It wa上海夜生活论坛s near enough right from the start. We got the goal – I think from a Newcastle mistake – but after we made two or three terrible mistakes which led to them scoring from a free-kick. All in all, it just seemed like that on the touchline. Mistake after mistake. We then missed a penalty at 2-1 which makes it even more difficult.”Opinion: Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – Given how much he’s been rejected by Real Madrid, we are convinced that Martin Odegaard is perfect for the Premier League.Martin Odegaard is finally…

He continued by adding that he knows about Carrol’s strengths: “Everyone knows how good Andy is. But we gave ourselves too much to do after conceding a farcical third goal. We have to try and get rid of the individual errors. We missed him at home. He’s the one player who can do more on the ball and it was glaringly obvious we missed him here.”

In the end, David Moyes insisted that his side will have to improve in solving these difficult situations: “It was going to be a test with expectations changing towards us winning, but it showed today that we could not do that. It was the manner of losing the goals. The third was a catastrophe, the way it came about. We don’t score the penalty, and those things can make a big difference.”

Reus desperate to stay fit

The Borussia Dortmund star is still on the recovery path to full fitness following a serious knee injury.

Marco Reus is certainly one of the most misfortunate footballers when it comes to health. The forward has had his career completely plagued with injuries and he insists he would gladly give up all of his wealth if that would make his career injury free in the future.

The 28-year-old spent a serious amount of time on the sidelines only to return and tear his cruciate ligament, which will force him off the pitch until the early part of 2018.

Dembele pushing hard for ‘El Clasico’

Ousmane Dembele is determined to get back to action in time for this year’s ‘El Clasico’.

The French forward has set himself the very ambitious goal of returning to the pitch for the Real Madrid – Barcelona match scheduled on the 23rd of December. Dembele would like to at least be on the bench for the derby, if not to start it.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund forward suffered a serious injury during his La Liga debut as a starting player for Barcelona, in the match against Getafe, in September. Initially, the medical team ruled him out for the rest of the year, but the young forward has big chances of returning before the end of the year.Valverde cools down controversies at the club Nedim Maric – Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde spoke at the press conference ahead of Barca’s Inter clash in the second fixture of the Champions League. While Barcelona started…

Lamela back after a year

Erik Lamea has been forced to the sidelines since last October, due to a hip injury but now it seems as the midfielder can return for Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t been able to put Erik Lamela in his first-team squad for over a year due to the 25-year-old’s injury. However, the Argentine attacker seems like he is ready for action as he lines up for Tottenham U23s against Chelsea.

The Argentine attacker had been a regular in the first-team under Mauricio Pochettino but a hip injury has kept him out since his last appearance on October 25, 2016, against Liverpool in the EFL Cup, GOAL reports.

Lame will get ready for his return as the U23 side of Tottenham faces the Blues of London, meanwhile the senior team goes on to battle with Arsenal in the two side’s North London derby on Saturday.

Pochettino’s side need a win over their London rivals as they are looking to finally win something at the end of the season, since their last trophy win was in 2008. In the meantime, Spurs U-23s are eighth in their 12-team division – one point ahead of Chelsea U23s, so that clash seems like an exciting one as well.

Lamela has made 121 appearances for Tottenham since joining from Roma in 2013 and is contracted to the club until 2020, GOA上海夜生活网L continues.

Back in Italy, where he spent two seasons with Roma, the attacking midfielder has appeared in 62 games and scored important goals for the Serie A giants.

In the 4 years he has spent with Spurs, Lamela has played in 85 games and scored 8 goals. His injury held him back though, but once he returns, the Tottenham offense can be even more lethal than it is now.

How soon can he return to the senior team? We don’t know yet, but the Argentine is certainly on the right path.

Manchester United holds Liverpool and remains unbeaten

Even though the Reds from Anfield dominated the game for the most part, the Red Devils clinched a 0-0 draw.

The 199th edition of one of the greatest derbies in English football between Liverpool and Manchester United showed no winner. This was the first game of the Merseyside clu上海夜生活论坛b in front of their new “Kenny Dalglish Stand” and to the disappointment of all the home fans, Klopp’s team could not find the back of the net.

Manchester United’s starting XI.Jamie Vardy hails Leicester’s 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle Andrew Smyth – Jamie Vardy was delighted as his brace helped Leicester City go third in the Premier League after a 5-0 thumping of 10-man Newcastle United.

The game started as expected with Liverpool dominating and taking the initiative from early on. United were defending deep and playing on the counter-attack, but many were surprised to see Mourinho’s team letting Liverpool take complete control over the game. Despite being disciplined and well-positioned in the back, the Red Devils were lucky to not conceive a goal after a beautiful cross by Firmino who passed it to Matip, but the defender’s effort was brilliantly saved by David de Gea. The ball went straight to Salah, but the Egypt international shot the ball wide on the follow up, wasting the Reds’ best chance to score in the first half. United’s only good chance to score a goal during the first half came after a combination between Lukaku and Martial, which left the Red Devils No. 9 in a great position as he forced a great save by his fellow countryman Mignolet. In fact, this was the only shot on target by Mourinho’s side for the first half.

The second half was no different from the first one. Klopp’s men were trying their best to find a goal, while United were comfortable playing on the back. The home team struggled to create a good chance due to United’s organized defense. However, in the 57th minute Emre Can had a great opportunity to open the score after a chip ball from Gomez, but the midfielder sent the ball over the crossbar from only a few meters away from the goal. Liverpool kept pushing until the last minute, but Mourinho’s side managed to fend off their attempts, sealing a hard fought point an remaining on top of the table as of now.

Manchester City, who are playing later today, have the chance to become the leaders of the table as they take on Stoke City at home today.

Barcelona won the ICC in a 3-2 win over Real Madrid

The Catalans won the trophy in a spectacular El Clásico.

Valverde’s team came out as winner in his first El Clásico as Barcelona head coach. The game took place in Hard Rock Stadium and it served as ‘repetition’ for the upcoming El Clásicos in August for the Supercopa de España.

The last time the two clubs met in a friendly outside of Spain was in 1982, when Real Madrid won 1-0 in Venezuela.

The game was packed with action and could not have started better for Catalan fans. By the 7th minute mark, Barca were already leading 2-0. The first to score was Lionel Messi who dribbled past Modrić and tried his luck with a shot. The ball hit Varan and the lucky ricochet left Navas helpless as the ball hit the back of the net.

It was not long after before Barcelona made it 2-0. After a combination between Neymar and Suarez, the Uruguayan passed to Rakitić, who finished the attack with a powerful shot to increase the lead. The Catalans’ offensive playstyle was too much for Real Madrid’s defense, which seemed rat上海夜生活her unprepared for Barca’s push.

However, Zidane’s men took advantage of their first dangerous situation. Kovačić was given too much freedom in front of the box as he fired an accurate shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. Valverde’s men were still the more active side as they missed dozens of chances to end the game early. At the start of the second half, Zidane substituted both Ramos and Varan with Fernández and Vallejo. Luka Modrić and Asensio also left the pitch for Isco and Vázquez. Barca’s only substitution was Sergi Roberto for Iniesta.

The change in Real’s defense caused confusion in their ranks, which could be seen in the 50th minute. After a free-kick ball from Neymar, Gerard Piqué was left completely unmarked and comfortably scored to make it 3-2 for Barca.

The rest of the game was packed with action in front of both goals, but none of them were successful.

Neville finds Mati\u0107 transfer ‘strange’

Nemanja Matić has joined Manchester United following a £40 million move from Stamford Bridge.

Gary Neville is positive that Matić will prove a great fit to the Red Devils, but also finds it strange of Chelsea to let such a player go.

Matić was brought to England by José Mourinho in 2014, winning the Premier League title in his debut campaign. He repeated that feat last season under Antonio Conte as Chelsea clinched the Premier League trophy.

Former Manchester United player Neville believes that the Blues might regret their decision to let an experienced and proved member of the team go.

“Michael Carrick’s obviously got one more year but he can’t play every single week so they’ve got to have that player come in and do the same job.” the defender said to Sky Sports.

Mourinho plans historical betrayal\u00a0

Manchester United are ready to enter the race for a rival player, in a move that would mean a historical betrayal.Written by Cosmin Mihalescu. May 7, 2017.

Jose Mourinho is ready to splash the cash in the upcoming transfer window. And one of the Portuguese’s targets is none other than city rival Sergio Agüero.

The English press states that the Red Devils are ready to make a bid of around €65m for Manchester City’s top goal scorer.

Agüero plays for City since 2011, when he was bought from Atletico Madrid for €45m. Although he is the team’s top goal scorer, Agüero started the year on the bench after the arrival of Gabriel Jesus and only regained his place in the starting eleven after the Brazilian got injured.Inter Milan V Lazio: Players to Watch Taimoor Khan – Inter Milan are set to host Lazio at the San Siro on Thursday and the game is definitely going to be an exciting affair…

Gabriel Jesus seems exactly the type of player that Guardiola loves and it looks like the Brazilian will be Pep’s first choice for the central striker position next season. Under these circumstances, Agüero might be tempted to consider other offers.

Mourinho sees the 28-year-old上海夜生活 as the perfect number 9 for his team, after the long-term injury of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will probably not be offered a contract extension.

Agüero is currently fifth in the top goalscorers list in Premier League, with 18 goals, one ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Romelu Lukaku from Everton tops the list with 24 goals.

And the Argentinian is not the only player that Mourinho wants from his city rivals. It was rumoured lately that Manchester United are considering a bid for the Citizen’s goalkeeper, Joe Hart. Hart is currently on loan at Torino and he is not part of Guardiola’s plans for next season.

Kante wins PFA Players’ Player of the Year

In a ceremony that took place Sunday evening at the Grosvenor Hotel in London, Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante has been presented with the Player of the Year award by the Professional Footballers Association.Written by Cosmin Mihalescu. April 24, 2017.

Competing against the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and team-mate Eden Hazard, Kante received the most votes from his fellow players.

After helping his former team, Leicester, to win an historical title last season, the French midfielder joined Chelsea for £32m last summer and is about to win his second consecutive Premier League title. Kante also discussed the ongoing season with Chelsea and his manager, Antonio Conte: “He [Conte] knows what he wants from the players. He wants to win, and we work very, very, very hard in training for him. He put a winning mentality into the squad, and everyone wants to give their best for the team, and to make Chelsea win titles. We have to fight for six more games. We’re going to fight like a final for every game, and hopefully we can win the league at the end of the season.”

Hundreds rally at U.S. Supreme Court, calling state abortion bans as step backward

WASHINGTON ( ) – Abortion-rights campaigners, including Democrats seeking their party’s 2020 presidential nomination, rallied at the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to protest new restrictions on abortion passed by Republican-dominated legislatures in eight states.

Many of the restrictions are intended to draw legal challenges, which religious conservatives hope will lead the nation’s top court to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy.

“We are not going to allow them to move our country backward,” U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, one of the two dozen Democrats running for president, told the crowd through a megaphone.

Another candidate, Senator Cory Booker, urged the crowd to “wake up more men to join this fight.”

The rally is one of scores scheduled for Tuesday around the country by the American Civil Liberties Union, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund and other abortion rights group. The protests are a response to laws passed recently by Republican state legislatures that amount to the tightest restrictions on abortion in the United States in decades.

Alabama passed an outright ban last week, including for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, unless the woman’s life is in danger. Other states, including Ohio and Georgia, have banned abortions absent a medical emergency after six weeks of pregnancy or after the fetus’s heartbeat can be detected, which can occur before a woman even realizes she is pregnant.

Protesters outside the Supreme Court waved signs saying “We won’t be punished” and “Protect Safe, Legal Abortion” and were joined by Pete Buttigieg, the South Bend, Indiana, mayor who also is vying for the 2020 nomination.

“My entire campaign is about freedom,” he said in a brief interview.

U.S. President Donald Trump, a Republican who opposes abortion, has seized on the issue as one likely to fire up his core supporters, although he considers the Alabama ban上海夜网 too restrictive because it does not make exceptions for incest and rape.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, another Democratic 2020 candidate, blamed what she called “outrageous bans” on Trump.

“This is the beginning of President Trump’s war on women,” she told the rally. “If he wants his war, he will have his war, and he will lose.”

The restrictive new laws are contrary to the Roe v. Wade ruling, which affords a woman the right to an abortion up to the moment the fetus would be viable outside the womb, which is usually placed at about seven months, or 28 weeks, but may occur earlier.

The bans have been championed by conservatives, many of them Christian, who say fetuses should have rights comparable to those of infants and view abortion as tantamount to murder. The Supreme Court now has a 5-4 conservative majority following two judicial appointments by Trump.

“This is probably one of the first times I’ve ever felt like it’s real that things could actually be overturned,” Tracy Leaman, 43, an event planner from the Washington area, said at Tuesday’s rally. “The Supreme Court is stacked against us for the first time in my lifetime. I feel like it’s scarier than ever before.”

A federal judge in Mississippi on Tuesday heard arguments in a lawsuit challenging the state’s new fetal-heartbeart abortion law. District Judge Carlton Reeves asked questions suggesting he thought the new law to be even more unconstitutional than the state’s 15-week abortion ban he struck down last year, USA Today reported.

HOUSTON ( ) – Occidental Petroleum Corp plans to quickly complete its $38 billion purchase of Anadarko Petroleum after the latter’s Aug. 8 shareholder vote, the company said on Thursday.

Occidental is battling activist investor Carl Icahn, who opposed the deal and launched a proxy fight to remove and replace four Occidental directors over what he called the “misguided” acquisition. That contest is expected to drag on into the fall.

Anadarko shareholders are expected next week to approve a deal that provides a 57% premium to its share price the day before it disclosed acquisition talks.

Hollub said the company would not make a decision on the fate of Anadarko’s stake in Western Midstream Partners until after the closing. She has pledged to raise between $10 billion and $15 billion by the end of 2021 from asset sales to help pay for the deal.

“We’ve got a lot of incoming calls about various things,” the CEO said of rivals’ interest in Anadarko assets. She declined to say what properties would be offered.

It has struck an agreement with Total to acquire Anadarko’s Africa assets for $10 billion.

Occidental this week hedged about 40% of its combined oil production into 2020 to assure shareholders it could make its dividend payments while paying off increased debt from the deal, finance chief Cedric Burgher said.

“The hedges will strengthen our cash flow from operations and provide assurance our dividend is safe,” he said.

Cain, Moore nominations for Federal Reserve seats on track: Kudlow

WASHINGTON ( ) – Top White House officials on Sunday defended President Donald Trump’s plan to name two political loyalists to the Federal Reserve board of governors, brushing aside controversies over their personal lives and qualifications to help run the world’s most powerful central bank.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney used appearances on Sunday morning talk shows to defend Trump’s plan to nominate economic commentator Stephen Moore and businessman and former presidential candidate Herman Cain to fill open board seats at the Fed.

“The president stands behind both of those gentlemen right now,” Kudlow said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“We have two open seats. The president has every right in the world to nominate people who share his economic philosophy.”

Trump has been highly critical of his handpicked Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, after a series of interest rate increases and other act上海夜生活ions last year that Trump feels have held back an economy that would be otherwise growing like a “rocket ship.”

The rate increases have left the central bank’s target interest rate still low by historical standards, and among monetary policy officials were considered a cautious hedge against a return of inflation in an economy that last year was going faster than expected. Keeping inflation under control is a key mission of the Fed, and higher rates help do so by discouraging borrowing and spending.

But “there is no inflation,” Kudlow said. Instead there was “worry that the central bank is not taking account of a weak world economy, some financial tightening in the marketplace,” and made monetary policy too restrictive.

The Fed said it was weak inflation, weakening global growth, and financial volatility that led it last year to put further rate increases on hold and shift other policies as well.

Still, Kudlow said the president believed that the Fed was fundamentally flawed in its view that at some point very low unemployment will lead to higher inflation.

That idea “has been disproven for decades,” he said. “We believe more people working and succeeding does not cause inflation.”

“President Trump has every right to put people on the Federal Reserve Board with a different point of view,” Kudlow said. “He wants people on the Fed who share his philosophy. It is not a political issue. It is an issue of how do you see the world.”

Cain and Moore have not yet been formally nominated, pending the completion of background checks, and would have to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

They will likely face questions about a series of matters, including the allegations of sexual harassment that prompted Cain to withdraw from the 2012 presidential race. He has denied the allegations. His current position with a pro-Trump political action committee has also drawn scrutiny.

Moore, meanwhile, has already been asked by Senate Democrats to produce information and documents about a $75,000 lien that the Internal Revenue Service has filed against him for back taxes. He also was cited for contempt of court in 2013 for overdue alimony and child support payments.

On policy, the two have been criticized as overtly political picks whose views of the economy have shifted based on the party in power, and who critics worry would try to shape monetary policy with Trump’s short-term political interests in mind.

Mulvaney said Cain “would be a great member of the Fed.”

Deutsche Bank careers end in an envelope, a hug and a cab ride

HONG KONG/LONDON/NEW YORK ( ) – Summoned by HR to be handed a Deutsche Bank envelope, many of its staff across the world then left their desks for the last time on Monday, shown the door by their German employer within hours of a restructuring announcement.

Deutsche Bank confirmed on Sunday that it was closing huge parts of its trading businesses, with staff in its equities division in Sydney and Hong Kong among the first to be told their roles would go.

“If you have a job for me, please let me know,” said a banker leaving the Hong Kong office on Monday.

Staff leaving in Hong Kong were holding envelopes with the bank’s logo. Three employees took a picture of themselves beside a Deutsche Bank sign outside, hugged and then hailed a taxi.

“They give you this packet and you are out of the building,” said one equities trader.

“The equities market is not that great so I may not find a similar job, but I have to deal with it,” said another.

At the bank’s Wall Street office, staff impacted by the cuts were summoned to the cafeteria to learn of their fate. A notice inside the building’上海夜生活论坛s lobby told staff the cafeteria would be closed until 11.30 a.m. EST.

Hundreds of staff were informed during the meetings that their positions were being cut, sources within the bank told . They also received details of their redundancy packages. One source said staff could be seen saying their goodbyes to colleagues upon leaving the cafeteria.

Speaking outside the bank’s office, one employee told the cuts had been anticipated for weeks.

“People have been planning their next moves but it’s a tough market,” the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Another employee, who asked not to be named, said the bank held a short meeting in its auditorium at 9.30 a.m. EST to inform staff of the cutbacks. He said he was later handed an envelope informing him of his redundancy. The staffer said he and his colleagues had known the impending cuts were likely for the past couple of weeks.

Deutsche Bank plans to close all of its equity trading business and cut some parts of its fixed income operations, in an overhaul expected to lead to 18,000 job cuts.

Some of those roles will be cut immediately, while some staff will be kept on for longer while they help wind down operations.

A few hours after the Hong Kong staff left, workers were seen leaving Deutsche Bank’s office in the City of London, which along with New York is expected to bear the brunt of the cuts, carrying similar envelopes.

“I was terminated this morning, there was a very quick meeting and that was it,” said one IT worker, who left while Deutsche Bank chief executive Christian Sewing was inside the building doing a call with the media.

Few staff wanted to speak outside the bank’s London office, but trade was picking up at the nearby Balls Brothers pub around lunchtime.

“I got laid off, where else would I go,” said a man who had just lost his job in equity sales.

FAR-FLUNG CUTS

The layoffs were going beyond the major financial centers.

A Deutsche Bank employee in Bengaluru told that he and several colleagues were told first thing that their jobs were going.

“We were informed that our jobs have become redundant and handed over our letters and given approximately a month’s salary,” he said.

“The mood is pretty hopeless right now, especially (among)people who are single-earners or have big financial burdens such as loans to pay,” he added.

Deutsche spokespeople in Hong Kong and London declined to comment on specific details about the number of departures, but said they would try to support people being made redundant.

For those losing their jobs in equities, finding a new one could prove difficult, with the industry still grappling with higher costs from new European regulations on share trading.

“The job market in equities is going to be very tough,” said George Kuznetsov head of research and analytics at Coalition, which analyses the investment banking industry.

“Our expectations if for equities sales and trading revenues falling 7-8% this year and that of course is going to put a lot of halts into the hiring across most of the brokers”.

For Deutsche Bank staff whose jobs are safe for now, there was some relief, but also big doubts about the future.

“The biggest question for us is where do we go from here if we don’t offer the whole suite of products? Will clients stick with us or is the game over?” said a Singapore banker who remains in his job.

GM to invest $150 million to boost heavy-duty pickup truck production

FLINT, Mich. ( ) – General Motors Co president Mark Reuss said on Wednesday that the automaker is investing about $150 million at its Flint Assembly plant, Michigan, to boost production of heavy duty trucks by another 40,000 vehicles a year.

Reuss announced the investment at the Flint truck assembly plant wearing a United Auto Workers pin.

The Detroit automaker announced in February it was adding 1,000 jobs in Flint to build a new generation of heavy-duty pickup trucks.

GM did not say that the latest investment would add more jobs at the plant, but Reuss said there could be opportunities to add workers as the launch of the automaker’s new trucks progresses.

GM has been under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump and lawmakers of both parties to add jobs in the United States after it said last November it would idle a small car assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, and had no new products for three other U.S. manufacturing plants.

The Flint investment will include upgrades to the plant’s conveyors and other new tooling, and will be completed in the first half of 2020. GM has invested more than $1.6 billion in the plant since 2013.

Last month, GM said it would invest $24 million to increase truck production at its assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which makes Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models.

Sales of heavy-duty pickups in the United States have grown to more than 600,000 vehicles a year, up more than 20 percent since 2013, according to industry data. Prices for luxury models can easily top $70,000.

GM’s Chevrolet and GMC brands have long trailed Ford Motor Co’s F-series heavy duty trucks in the lucrative segment. The new Chevrolet and GMC heav上海夜生活网y duty trucks have been re-engineered to tow heavier trailers, and keep pace in what has become an arms race among the Detroit Three automakers to claim superior torque and towing capability.

Dutch spy agency investigating alleged Huawei ‘backdoor’: Volkskrant

AMSTERDAM ( ) – Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei has a hidden “backdoor” on the network of a major Dutch telecoms firm, making it possible to access customer data, newspaper De Volkskrant said on Thursday, citing unidentified intelligence sources.

The newspaper said Dutch intelligence agency AIVD was looking into whether the situation had enabled spying by the Chinese government.

In a statement, Huawei said it was “surprised” by the Volkskrant report and that it would not respond to its core allegations because they came from anonymous sources.

Earlier, a company representative was quoted in De Volkskrant as saying Huawei complied with all laws in every country where it operates, and “keeps the door closed to governments or others who want to use our network for activities that would threaten cyber security.”

A spokesman for the AIVD said the agency would not comment on the Vo上海夜网lkskrant report.

In April, the agency said it was “undesirable for the Netherlands … to depend on the hardware or software of companies from countries running active cyber programs against Dutch interests,” naming China and Russia.

Of the three large Dutch telecommunications companies, KPN and VodafoneZiggo declined to comment on the report, while T-Mobile/Tele2 said it was not aware of any AIVD investigation.

The report comes a day after U.S. President Donald Trump banned Huawei from buying vital U.S. technology without special approval and effectively barring its equipment from U.S. telecoms networks on national security grounds.

KPN said last month it would exclude Huawei equipment from the “core” of its mobile network in the future, but would continue to use Huawei radio towers.

A Dutch government panel is currently reviewing security guidelines to prevent spying ahead of the construction of the country’s 5G mobile networks. Foreign Minister Stef Blok said at a press conference on Wednesday the panel would deliver a decision “soon” on whether Huawei would be allowed as a vendor.

The Volkskrant story did not contain any details of whether the alleged “backdoor” was hardware or software, how it works, or whether it has actually been used.
