China’s Huawei in unprecedented media blitz as it battles…

HONG KONG ( ) – China’s Huawei has launched an unprecedented public relations blitz, thrusting its low-key founder in front of international media as the telecoms firm seeks to ease concern among Western nations bent on shutting it out of their markets.

The move, along with significant personnel change in its 300-strong corporate affairs department, comes as the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker battles fear of Chinese authorities accessing its infrastructure for espionage.

In a 25-minute interview aired late on Sunday – his first with state-controlled China Central Television (CCTV) – Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] Chief Executive Ren Zhengfei shrugged off the global push against his company, which has repeatedly denied any state links.

“If you do (your product) well, there is no need to worry about sales… It would be stupid on their part if they don’t buy,” the 74-year-old said in a one-on-one, adding to three group interviews last week with English, Chinese and Japanese media outlets.

“It would be their loss,” Ren said, referring to the United States and other Western countries which have restricted Huawei in their markets.

Before last week, Ren had had no more than 10 interviews across media since founding Huawei in 1987, CCTV said. He last met international media at Davos in 2015.

“My public relations department forced me,” a smiling Ren told CCTV when asked why he had opened up to the media. “I must make our client,上海夜网Fabiana,s understand us, make our 180,000 employees understand us, come together and get through this tough time.”

The comments come as Polish authorities earlier this month arrested a Huawei executive on spying allegations, fuelling Western suspicion against Huawei on national security grounds.

While the Chinese national who was immediately sacked by Huawei denied the allegations, Huawei is bracing for potential fallout from its biggest Western markets as Germany debates whether to follow the United States and allies such as Australia in restricting Huawei’s market access.

The firm has been shut out of Australia and New Zealand’s markets for fifth-generation (5G) mobile telecoms equipment, while the U.S. President Donald Trump is considering an outright ban on all Huawei equipment with an executive order.

Huawei is nevertheless seeing fast growth, securing 30 contracts to supply 5G equipment and shipping 25,000 5G base stations already – up from 25 contracts in December, Ren told CCTV.

A person close to Ren told that the CEO felt the need to talk to the media after the string of negative events overshadowed the company’s business over the past year.

Among the most high-profile events was the arrest in Canada of Ren’s daughter – Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wenzhou – over alleged violations of U.S. sanctions on Iran.

“With all the attacks over the past year, now it got personal – when your daughter gets arrested,” said the person, who was not authorized to speak with media and so declined to be identified.

The arrest was made at the request of the United States, and further strained Sino-U.S. at a time when trade friction was already threatening to undermine ties.

Still, with his daughter released on bail and awaiting a U.S. extradition request, Ren, in an interview with international media last week, described Trump as a “great president”.

Ren’s media engagement is part of a broader public relations offensive by a firm whose traditional opaqueness results from being in a highly competitive sector and having significant R&D programs, “perhaps lending credence to misperceptions we are too secretive”, said Chen Lifang, president of public affairs.

“Huawei is very concerned about misunders上海夜生活网tandings which continue to linger despite our best efforts in recent years,” Chen told in a statement. “Huawei is committed to being even more open and transparent for not only this year but the foreseeable future.”

The firm has expanded its international communications team by 25 percent to 30 people over the pa,上海夜生活男人好去处Rachel,st six months as it steps up engagement with foreign media, including tours to research labs that had not previously been open to outsiders.

Among major personnel changes, Huawei’s president of global media and communications, Joy Tan, has moved to Washington to run media and government relations operations there, while Song Kai, former deputy CEO of Huawei U.S. and former CEO of Huawei France, has moved back to headquarters to take over Tan’s role.

Huawei’s Washington office has more than halved in size over the past year to low single-digit regular staff members, with some employees voluntarily leaving the firm as it was pushed out of the market, people familiar with the matter said.

reported earlier this month that Huawei Canada’s vice president of corporate affairs had left the company as scrutiny of the firm deepened.

Some Huawei employees described the rapid turn in the international environment as beyond their imagination.

“The AT&T deal at the start of the year was like the party about to start,” a member of Huawei’s public relations team told , referring to a partnership with U.S. company AT&T Inc (T.N).

“And then suddenly the house caught fire, ,上海021夜网Larissa,the party became firefighting, and then the fire spread to more and more places… Now we decided we’ve just had enough. It’s time to be proactive and open ourselves up to the world.”

GE to combine renewable, grid assets into single unit

( ) – General Electric Co said on Wednesday it would fold its battery storage and electrical grid units into its wind turbine and hydropower business to cut costs, speed decision-making and cater to surging demand for renewable power.

The announcement, a day before ,上海夜生活去哪玩Idaia,GE was due to report fourth-quarter results, will eliminate a layer of management mostly based in Chicago, with minimal reduction in staff. The combined unit will have about 40,000 employees and annual revenue of about $16 billion, GE spokesman Jim Healy said in an interview, compared with $10.2 billion for renewable energy last year.

GE’s renewables business currently comprises on- and offshore wind turbines, plus hydropower. GE’s units handling electrical transmission and distribution grids, battery storage and solar inverters and controls had been in GE’s Power business, which is focused on fossil fuel generation. Regional leaders for renewables上海夜生活 will now deal direct,上海夜生活怎么玩Radley,ly with the company’s renewables headquar,上海夜网Kaiden, ters in Paris. GE does not make solar panels.

The move is GE’s first big structural shift since October, when it said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice had expanded accounting probes to include a $22 billion writedown of goodwill at GE Power in the third quarter.

To help its ailing power business, GE said in October it would separate natural gas power from coal, nuclear and grid, and named new leaders for the units. Some analysts interpreted the moves as GE preparing its non-gas businesses for sale.

GE’s newest gas turbines are under scrutiny after a broken blade severely damaged a unit in Texas last year, causing a two-month plant outage. The break has forced some utilities to curtail use of their new GE turbines while they await blade replacements, and GE has since said it knew about the problem after a similar blade broke in 2015.

GE’s power division took on added importance to GE’s future earnings after the company announced last year it would focus on jet engines, power plants and renewable energy and dispose of its healthcare unit and majority stake in Baker Hughes, along with other restructuring.

GE’s renewable energy unit contributed about 9 percent of the company’s industrial revenues in 2017, before the integration. Power contributed about 28 percent.

“This strategic realignment positions GE to lead in the fast-growing renewable energy market,” GE Chief Executive Officer Lawrence Culp said in a statement.

GE shares were up 0.7 percent at $8.96 in early trading

Embattled Alabama Republican Senate candidate ahead in CBS poll

WASHINGTON ( ) – Embattled Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore led his Democratic opponent by six percentage points in a CBS News poll released on Sunday, with most Alabama Republicans saying the allegations of sexual misconduct against him are fal,上海夜生活桑拿会所Octavien,se.

Moore was leading Democrat Doug Jones 49 to 43 percent among voters likely to cast ballots in the Dec. 12 special election, CBS said. The contest was even among registered voters, it said.

Republican lawmakers in Washington, including Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, have distanced th上海夜生活论坛emselves from Moore and called for him to step down from the race after he was accused by several women of sexual assault and misconduct when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s. has not been able to independently verify the allegations.

But McConnell said on Sunday that if Moore is elected, the Senate will swear him in and then the Senate ethics committee would decide whether to investigate the allegations.

“We’ll swear in whoever’s elected and see where we are at that point,” McConnell said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“We can’t stop him from being seated,” said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who was also interviewed on CBS. “If there was an (ethics) in,上海新夜网龙凤Fabiana, vestigation and all six members of the committee said they believe he was a child molester, that would be a problem.”

According to the CBS poll, 71 percent of Alabama Republicans say the allegations against Moore are false, and believe that Democrats and the media are behind the accusations.

Another poll a day earlier had Jones barely ahead. The Washington Post-Schar School poll said Jones’ support among likely voters stood at 50 percent, versus Moore’s 47 percent.

President Donald Trump originally backed Moore’s opponent in the Republican primary, Senator Luther Strange. But Trump has since defended Moore, noting Moore has denied allegations of sexual misconduct. The president says he does not want Moore’s Democratic opponent to win.

Trump is slated to travel to a rally in Pensacola, Florida on Friday — a city just across the state line from Alabama — just days ahead of the Alabama election. The timing and location gives Trump an opportunity to express support for Moore.

Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate and are eager to maintain their advantage to advance Trump’s legislative agenda on taxes, healthcare and ot,上海夜网推油Sabine, her priorities.

AT&T ads returning to YouTube, two years after pulling back over…

( ) – AT&T Inc (T.N) said Friday it will again buy advertising on Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) YouTube, nearly two years after the U.S. wireless carrier left the video platform when it discovered its ads may have appeared next to inappropriate content.

AT&T is one of the largest U.S. brand marketers by total ad spend, according to research firm eMarketer, and its return caps off a tumultuous period for YouTube beginning in March 2017, when major advertisers including Verizon C,夜上海419龙凤论坛Balthazar,ommunications Inc (VZ.N) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), left the platform after their ads played during videos featuring hate speech or other disturbing material.

As brands eventually returned to YouTube, AT&T remained 上海夜生活网a major advertiser that held back.

After 22 months of working closely with Google, AT&T s,上海夜生活论坛Ebba, aid it was confident “that there is a near-zero possibility” its ads could end up appearing next to inappropriate or unapproved content on YouTube, Fiona Carter, AT&T’s chief brand officer, said in an interview.

Increased human review of videos and improved machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) wit,上海夜网Hadrian, hin YouTube helped AT&T decide to return, Carter said. Additionally, AT&T ran three “dummy” ad campaigns that used Google house ads to mimic how AT&T would run its own ad campaigns, so the company could be sure they would not unintentionally appear on videos that were counter to its corporate values.

AT&T reviews the content and topics it considers appropriate for its brand on a quarterly basis. It avoids advertising next to content that is violent or extremist, or includes hate speech and adult content, using YouTube’s Brand Suitability System, a set of stricter advertising rules the platform put in place last year.

“We knew that we needed to have our hands on the wheel,” Carter said, adding she was happy with how Google rose to the challenge to address brand safety on YouTube.

AT&T will begin purchasing ads over the coming weeks, though Carter declined to say how much the company expects to spend on YouTube.

Exclusive: Autogrill submitted a bid for Elior’s Areas business -…

MILAN ( ) – Italy’s Autogrill (AGL.MI) has submitted a bid for the railways, motorway and airport catering business of France’s Elior (ELIOR.PA), a source told on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, a separate source told that Elior was seeking bids ,上海夜生活去哪玩Kaiden,by the end of January for its Areas catering business.

The source added that around 10 private equity funds – including KKR, Lone Star and Blackstone – were上海夜生活 considering making a bid.

On the other hand, Italian food producer and distributor Cremonini and French group Lagardere have both said they did not plan to table offers to buy Elior’s assets.

Analysts value Areas – which has core ear,上海晚上耍女人的地方Kaiden, nings of about 200 million euros – at 7.5 to 10 times earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) compared to 8 to 11 times for Autogrill or Britain’s SSP Group Plc (SSPG.L).

This means the deal could have a value of between 1.5 and 2 billion euros.

Facebook plans content oversight board, tightens paid ad rules

BRUSSELS ( ) – Facebook Inc on Monday laid out plans for an independent content oversight board with the power to overturn company decisions on user posts, aimed at addressing concerns over misinformation and abusive behavior on the platform.

The board’s 40 members would select cases to review as the world’s largest social media network tries to crack down on harassment, incitement of violence and the spread of false information without infringing freedom of speech.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has said that Facebook should not make such decisions, but defer to an independent body of technology and human rights experts free of commercial influences.

Facebook will select inaugural members for three-year terms, but they will independently decide on future membership, Facebook proposed in a draft charter.

Details about the board’s makeup and appeals process will be finalised after a series of workshops over the next six months, wrote Nick Clegg, Facebook’s recently appointed head of global affairs, in a,上海夜玩网论坛Hallie, blog post introducing the charter.

At a news conference in Brussels, Clegg also said the company will strengthen rules and safeguards around political advertisements to prevent foreign interference in elections, including those in Europe this year.

Facebook has faced pressure from regulators and the public after last year’s revelation that British consultancy Cambridge Analytical had improperly acquired data on millions o,上海夜生活网419Sabia,f U.S. users to target election advertising.

Fears about misinformation and interference have intensified with elections due this year for the European Parliament and several EU countries including Belgium and Finland.

“We will require those wanting to run political and issue ads to be authorized, and we will display a ‘paid for by’ disclaimer on those ads,” Clegg said.

Clegg, a for上海夜生活论坛mer British deputy prime minister hired by Facebook in October last year, said the new tools to be launched in late March aim to help protect the integrity of European Union elections due to be held this spring.

Facebook said the transparency tools for electoral ads would be expanded globally before the end of June, while the tools would be in launched in India in February before its elections and in Ukraine and Israel before polls in both.

“We now have more than 30,000 people working on safety and security across the company, three times as many as we had in 2017,” the company said in a statement.

The new tools are similar to those adopted for the U.S. mid-ter,上海夜生活怎么玩Jacklyn,m elections, Clegg said, with all political ads stored in a publicly searchable library for up to seven years.

This will contain information such as the amount of money spent and the number of impressions displayed, who paid for them and the demographics of those who saw them, including age, gender and location.

The new tools will also cover ‘issue ads’ which do not explicitly back one candidate or political party but which focus on highly politicized topics like immigration.

Facebook said it would also set up two new regional operations centers focused on monitoring election-related content in its Dublin and Singapore offices.

“These teams will add a layer of defenses against fake news, hate speech and voter suppression,” it said

Clegg also addressed allegations that Facebook sells user data, saying this was not the case.

“Selling people’s information to advertisers would not only be the wrong thing to do, it would undermine the way we do business, because it would reduce the unique value of our service to advertisers,” he said.

Facebook has no plans to swap its ads-only business model for a fee-paying service, Clegg said, responding to calls by some as a way to stave off privacy issues.

“We want Facebook to be a universal service. We believe that anyone should be able to connect to anyone else. The best way to do this is to offer the service for free – and that’s what the advertising model allows us to do,” he said.

Mastercard says plans to apply for China license to clear card…

SHANGHAI ( ) – U.S. payments card company Mastercard Inc said on Friday it still plans to apply for a bankcard clearing license in China and was in “active discussions” to explore solutions.

Mastercard “continues to make every effort to secure the requisite license to be able to access Chin,上海夜生活桑拿会所Jacob,a’s domestic market,” it said in a statement posted on its website.

The company “hopes to be able to present another application for the bankcard clearing license in the very near future.”

State newspaper Beijing News reported on Friday that Mastercard had submitted application materials in 2017 but voluntarily withdrew its application in June 2018, citing an unnamed source at China’s central bank.

Mastercard did not immediately r,上海夜生活群Nala, espond to an emailed request from on Saturday for further comment.

American Express Co in November won approval to clear card payments in China, becoming the first U.S. card network to gain direct access to what is set to be the biggest bank card market by 2上海夜生活论坛020.

Previously, foreign card companies have had to par,上海夜生活网419Sabina,tner with China’s UnionPay, a state-controlled consortium that enjoyed a monopoly on all yuan payment cards issued and used in the country, for access to the country’s payments network.

Sorrell’s S4 Capital seeks more deals in digital-only drive

MUNICH ( ) – Martin Sorrell is on the lookout for acqu,上海夜生活群Mace, isitions to expand his new advertising venture S4 Capi,上海夜网官方网站Sabina, tal, aiming to capitalize on the disruption sweeping the industry by pursuing a pure-play digital strategy.

Sorrell, who was ousted from WPP last April after three decades building it into the world’s largest advertising holding company, started again with the purchase of S4 as a shell and has clinched two deals so far.

He outbid WPP in July for Dutch digital advertising agency Media Monks for 300 million euros (£264.8 million pounds) and in December bought San Francisco-based programmatic advertising company MightyHive for an enterprise value of $150 million.

“It’s a good base, but we need to do more – we need to do more organically and we need to do more by acquisition,” Sorrell told on the sidelines of the DLD Munich technology conference.

Sorrell founded WPP in 1985 and stunned the advertising world two years later by launching a $566 million (£439.4 million) hostile takeover of J. Walter Thompson. Then, in 1989, WPP bought Ogilvy Group for $864 million.

This time, however, 73-year-old Sorrell wants to keep S4 digital-only and build on core competences in content and programmatic advertising, which involves automated distribution of ads across the internet.

Sorrell plans to offer digital content, analytics and distribution to help clients to reach customers in a rapidly changing media environment that he views as an opportunity rather than a threat.

He said he would be interested in buying first-party data assets, though this could be an expensive proposition. He also wants to expand S4’s geographical coverage – it now has around 1,200 staff in a dozen countries – into Germany.

“Much of it actually depends on serendipity,” said Sorrell, recalling the early years at WPP.

“Did I think we would buy a company 13 times our size in ‘87? The answer’s ‘No’. We have to see what is going to happen because the industry is in a state of disruption.”

His strategy reflects the rise of Google and Facebook to dominate online advert上海夜生活ising. Both are ‘walled gardens’, mea,上海夜生活服务Jace, ning that they rather than the marketer effectively control the relationship with consumers.

Major brands, meanwhile, are seeking to re-establish a direct connection to customers and the all-important data that reveals whether they might buy a product or service.

Working with that first-party data is where Sorrell and S4 come in, by designing and delivering online advertising to the likes of viewers of video streaming service Netflix.

Sorrell’s vision of S4 as a purely digital business also reflects his thinking on the predicament faced by big advertising holding companies, including WPP.

These have lost business to the Silicon Valley giants while also becoming too big and complex to respond to rapidly changing technology and client needs.

Sorrell, still a shareholder in WPP, gave a lukewarm assessment of restructuring efforts under new management headed by Mark Read. He said that some steps – such as merging U.S. agency Young & Rubicam with digital vehicle VML – had been under discussion while he was still at the helm.

“To be fair and frank, I don’t think there’s much change, but there’s a lot of talk,” said Sorrell.

Sorrell reckons it is too soon to write off the advertising holding companies, however, singling out Japan’s Dentsu as the strongest of the global players. “It mirrors S4,” he added with a smile.

He predicts a “bumpy” year for the global economy, but the combination of a possible slowdown with attempts by the advertising industry to reinvent itself is one that is, on balance, positive for S4.

“The good news is that S4 Capital is a clean sheet of paper,” he said. “The holding companies are prisoners of history and the disruption.”

Mueller’s Russia probe cost his office $3.2 million in first four…

WASHINGTON ( ) – U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office has spent about $3.2 million in the first 4-1/2 months of its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the Justice Department revealed in a上海夜生活 report on Tuesday.

In addition, the department said that its various offices have also spent another $3.5 million to help assist the probe, though those expenditures would have occurred “irrespective of the existence of the” special counsel’s office.

Although the expenditures that took place between mid-May and Sept. 30 for the special counsel’s operations are relatively low compared with what many ,上海晚上耍女人的地方Jacklyn, had anticipated, they could provide additional fodder for Republicans who have been critical of Mueller’s work.

That money has helped fund 17 attorneys working on the probe, as well as Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, support staff, travel, rent, acquisitions of equipment and other expenses.

The bulk of the spending – $1.7 million – has been on personnel salary and benefits, according to the report.

Some of the attorneys working on the probe were hired from law firms, but many were already on the government payroll and were detailed from their regul,上海夜玩网论坛Idris,ar Justice Department jobs.

Equipment acquisitions marks the second-highest expense, coming in at more than $733,上海夜网后花园Fabiana,,000, followed by costs for rent and utilities, travel and transportation, and contractual services.

The special counsel’s overall budget has not been made public.

Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog, last month sued the Justice Department in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia for a copy of the budget, after seeking it through a Freedom of Information Act request.

In November, several Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives also introduced a resolution calling on Mueller to resign, saying he never disclosed to Congress the details of a bribery case involving the subsidiary of a Russian company that purchased U.S. uranium mines during his tenure as director of the FBI.

Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee who drafted the measure, conceded Tuesday that the dollar figure is relatively low, but said he remains concerned that Mueller’s investigation is still a waste.

“The cost of the Mueller investigation is far more than dollars and cents,” he told in an interview.

“This investigation is impairing the legitimate conduct of the legitimately elected President of the United States.”

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued a statement calling Mueller’s spending “entirely reasonable.”

Since the probe began in May, the special counsel has charged four people, two of whom have pleaded guilty.

The combined $6.7 million spent by Mueller’s office and other offices supporting his investigation only covers the special counsel’s investigation, not the various congressional investigations of Russia’s meddling in the election.

Mueller’s next expense report is due at the end of March.

Macau casino queen Pansy Ho tightens grip over SJM Holdings

HON,上海夜网Faith,G KONG ( ) – Pansy Ho, co-chair of Macau casino firm MGM China (2282.HK), has struck a strategic alliance that boosts her control of the crown jewel of her father’s business empire, SJM Holdings (0880.HK), sending shares of SJM sharply higher on Thursday.

Pansy Ho’s property to transport conglomerate Shun Tak (0242.HK) said late on Wednesday that Ho and four other shareholders of SJM’s holding company STDM have agreed to jointly vote their combined 53 percent stake to more efficiently manage SJM.

That puts the alliance’s influence at SJM ahead of that of Angela Leong – the casi,上海夜生活桑拿会所Eason,no operator’s co-chairman and current wife of Ho’s 97-year-old father Stanley Ho. Leong holds 8 percent of SJM.

The news of the alliance helped send shares in SJM up more than 8 percent on Thursday, while Shun Tak rose 6 percent, as investors expected more stability in SJM’s ownership.

SJM and Leong did not have immediate comments.

The move comes ahead of the expiration of casino licenses in the world’s biggest gambling hub of Macau, where SJM and MGM’s licenses are set to expire in 2020.

The concessionaires, which also include Wynn Macau, Sands Macau, Galaxy Entertainment (0027.HK) and Melco Resorts (MLCO.O), don’t have clarity yet on what happens when their licenses expire, starting next year.

About a third the size of Manhattan, Macau is the only place in China where casinos are allowed.

Born into a family that developed a flourishing gambling culture in the southern Chinese territory more than 50 years ago, Ho is spearheading a mov,上海凤楼夜网Fabi,e to ensure stability, aiming to extend SJM’s gaming concession and maintain STDM as the majority owner of SJM.

In 2011, Stanley Ho sued family members in a high-profile dynastic fight in which he sought to recover billions in assets after a share restructuring he said was done without his consent.

Th上海夜生活e dispute was settled after two months but gave an insight into the factious nature of Ho’s family and the lifestyle of one of Asia’s wealthiest families.
